These periods provide young athletes with the opportunity to make better improvements to develop their athleticism. These periods will have an impact on the training program design, content, intensity, volume frequency, periodization, coaching style, and the specific requirements of the segregated age groups.

The first window of opportunity occurs before the 𝙋𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙃𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙑𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 (𝙋𝙃𝙑) that lies between the ages of approximately 6 to 8 years old for girls and 7 to 9 years old for boys. During this period, it is considered a prime time for children to be exposed to proper movement mechanics. This is also the critical period is where speed responses will be maximized. Developing children with age-appropriate training that requires high levels of neural activation e.g. plyometrics and sprint training may be most suitable for them.

The second window of opportunity that happens with the establishment of PHV. Endurance is most effectively improved at the start of PHV. Girls benefit from strength training most on the onset of PHV and boys 12 to 18 months after. PHV also enables adolescents to undergo periods of rapid gains in muscle mass and strength that have been closely associated with running speed. Hence this period is a critical time to emphasize speed and agility training in youth programs.

Therefore, the determining and association with the PHV and is important for athletic development and plays an important role for young athletes, coaches, and parents to assist to establish the current stages of biological age of the young athlete and possibly be able to generally determine the windows of opportunities to enable how training should be manipulated in order to optimize athletic development.
